The migration spike comes after a visa-free agreement between Nicaragua and Havana came into force in November 2021, reducing the travel time to the US border.
The new wave of migration exceeds the 1980 wave, when 125,000 Cubans arrived in the US on boats departing from the port of Mariel.
Last June only, 16,170 Cubans attempted to cross the southern border of the United States from Mexico, and another 38 from Canada.
The poor financial conditions of La Isla, as well as the political restrictions, have been the main reasons for the increase in the number of people who venture on these crossings to reach the United States.
Experts expect these figures to increase. The opening of the US Embassy in Cuba and new migration agreements are seen as a hope for an end to this migratory route that has cost so many lives.
