Cuba is a very strict country when it comes to issuing visas for foreigners to enter the country, which is why it divides them into different categories: tourist, work, etc. visas. The procedures associated with the issuance of these visas are respected in order to maintain the safety of Cuban and international citizens.
For this reason, those interested in working in Cuba must apply for a work visa that allows them to enter Cuba and obtain a work permit that links them to the contracting company, which may be a mixed company with foreign capital or the headquarters of a foreign company in Cuba.
How do I get a visa to work in Cuba?
Obtaining a visa to work in Cuba is a complex process that requires obtaining a series of special work permits for foreigners. This process can be lengthy and bureaucratic depending on the circumstances, so it is necessary to understand the requirements and steps to obtain a visa.
Find an employer in Cuba
The first step is to find a Cuban employer who will offer you a job. This step is crucial because the work visa application is made through the hiring company, which must submit a formal request to the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) to authorize the hiring.
If the process is successful, the MTSS will issue a work permit for the foreigner, which the company must then submit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) for a visa application.
Documents that are required to obtain a visa
- Permit to work issued by MTSS
- Letter of invitation from the contracting company
- Certificates, diplomas, or other evidence of the availability of qualifications and experience
- Certificate confirming that you have the financial capacity to live in Cuba
- A criminal record certificate issued within the last three months.
- Passport valid for at least 6 months after the visa is issued
- International Health Insurance
- Two of your most recent passport photos
- Completed and signed visa application
Note: Before submitting your application, please check with the Cuban consulate in your country for the required package of documents and other requirements specific to your case.
Visa application
Once you have gathered the necessary documents, you will submit your application for a work visa to the Cuban consulate in your country of residence. They will review the documents and, if necessary, call you for a personal interview at the consulate.
If your application is approved, you will be issued with a temporary work visa to work here.
