How do I get a journalist visa to travel to Cuba?

Oct 4 , 2024

Obtaining a visa in Cuba depends on the conditions and motivations for traveling to this destination. For this reason, the types of visas are very well defined and differentiated so that travelers know exactly which of these options they can benefit from.

Among the variety of visas that exist in Cuba, there is one specifically designed for foreign press professionals who intend to practice their profession in the island for a certain period of time or permanently.

Foreign journalists must have a D-6 visa for entry into Cuban territory for the purpose of their work.

Steps to Take to Obtain a Journalist Visa to Cuba

To apply, you must go to the Cuban Embassy or Consulate closest to where you live (in some cases you may need to make an appointment by e-mail) and bring the completed application form, your resume and the letter from the media company you work for requesting your services on the island.

Note: It is important that you apply for the D-6 visa at least 30 days before your trip, as waiting times can vary depending on demand and the country where the consulate is located..

Once the application has been made, the Cuban embassy or consulate will send it to the International Press Center (CPI), which will give a definitive answer on the acceptance or refusal of the visa.

Foreign journalist accreditation

Journalists with work contracts with Cuban media or foreign media based in Cuba may apply for permanent accreditation on the island through the International Press Center (CPI), providing the following documents

  • Accreditation form
  • Journalist’s resume
  • Two passport photos
  • Formal request from the media requesting your services
  • The most important information about the media
  • Payment of the appropriate amount for accreditation

Note 1: The journalist must also have an active D-6 visa in his or her valid passport, without which he or she cannot be accredited to work in Cuban territory.
