How to travel to Cuba with a pet

Feb 16 , 2024

For many people, a pet is a very special part of the family. Keeping them close to provide the care they need and receiving their love and loyalty in return is more than an obligation for people who choose to have a pet in their home.

This is why it is so important to be able to include pets in the events that the people who care for them are involved in, so much so that when it comes to travelling, many people do everything they can to take their pets with them.

Most countries have very specific rules about bringing animals into their territory, in some places it is forbidden, in others there is little bureaucracy involved.

This is the case in Cuba, where you have to meet some basic requirements to bring your pets to the island, but only traditional pets – dogs and cats – are allowed.

Travelling with your pet in Cuba is safe. As long as you comply with all regulations and carry the required documents when you enter, you shouldn’t encounter any problems.

Here are some tips on how to travel to Cuba with your pet.

The first step is to go to a vet. You will need an official health certificate. Once there, they will give your pet all the necessary vaccinations, one of the most important of which is a vaccination against rabies.

Documents that need to be presented to the consulate

  • A certificate of good health and up to date vaccinations (this can be issued by an approved veterinary surgeon or veterinary clinic).
  • Veterinary passport with current vaccination details
  • A photocopied passport of the person travelling with the pet.

All documents must be duly legalised at the consulate. This can be done at the same time as applying for the export certificate.

Documents must be issued less than 10 days prior to travelling.

If all documents comply with the established parameters, the consulate issues anOfficial Export Certificate..

It is very important to check the requirements of the airline you intend to travel with, as each airline has its own policies regarding the carriage of pets. In some cases they will be able to travel with you in the passenger cabin, and in other cases they will have to be transported in cages. The cost of travel with pets depends in some cases on the weight of the pet and in others on the airline’s terms and conditions.
