Illegal Entry of Cubans to the US Decreases

Mar 21 , 2023

After US President Joe Biden announced a new policy earlier this year to allow 30,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans to enter the country each month, there have been notable positive results. The decrease in illegal entries through the southern border reveals the success of this new measure.

The number of Cubans entering the country through its border with Mexico was encouraging accounting for just 6433 entries into the country using this route. This figure represents a decrease of 85% in illegal entries into the country when compared to last December. In that month, the figures were alarming, reaching a record 42637 people who opted to apply for asylum on US territory.

Troy Miller, director of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported a decrease in the number of arrests enforced by Border Patrol. According to the official, October 2021 marked the last time such low numbers of migrants had been reported. On that date, the number of Cubans entering the United States crossing the southern border was 5,896. In the first month of this year, there was a total number of 11,893 Cubans entering US territory using different routes.

Although this procedure is successful, illegal entries are still occurring.

Despite the success of the new regulations providing safe migration routes for Cubans into the country concerned, the irregular migration flows have not ceased. Illegal entries into the US by land and sea are still widespread and the authorities are urged to take measures such as arrests and deportations.

In the last few days, local media have published information about these operations. As a result, there are reports of the detention of Cubans in different States and cities of the United States because they are considered to be illegal; the places where these arrests most frequently happen are Miami and Tampa, because of their large Cuban populations.

The number of Cubans entering the United States illegally keeps declining this month. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas acknowledged the successful results of the new programme for Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan and Venezuelan citizens. On the other hand, according to a speech delivered on 7 February, President Joe Biden revealed that the humanitarian parole programme and the deportation of illegal immigrants are significant achievements of his administration.
