Details About Applying for U.S. Citizenship

May 24 , 2023

Being born in the United States is not the only way to become a U.S. citizen, there is also the naturalization process, through which thousands of immigrants in that country benefit annually to become U.S. citizens. This is a higher category than resident status and therefore the first requirement to apply for this is having a Green Card or Permanent Resident Card.

Obtaining citizenship is one of the biggest challenges for immigrants in the United States, due to the advantages of having the rights of a naturalized citizen in that country. The benefits of this status are considerable and to apply for it one must meet certain requirements and follow the procedure established by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which oversees the process for obtaining U.S. citizenship.

Summary of Information About Citizenship in the USA

Below Opapeleo provides a summary of the main facts you need to know about naturalization in the northern country.

U.S. Citizenship Benefits

Being a U.S. citizen makes it possible to:

  • The right to vote
  • The right to run for public office
  • Benefiting from U.S. tax legislation
  • Not being subject to deportation
  • Help family members obtain their Green Card

In addition to the above they can have their family members join them in the United States through the process of family reunification and also with the New Parole sponsor Venezuelan, Cuban, Nicaraguan or Haitian nationals (provided they meet the other requirements to apply as a sponsor), in order to migrate legally into U.S. territory.

Requirements to Obtain U.S. Citizenship

Permanent residents may be eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship if they meet the following requirements:

  1. Be 18 years of age at the time you submit your application
  2. Be a legal permanent resident for the past three or five years (depending on the category of naturalization under which you are applying).
  3. Have been a resident and physically present in the U.S.
  4. Be able to read, write and speak basic English
  5. Demonstrating good moral character
  6. Show knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government.
  7. Prove an allegiance to the principles of the Constitution of the United States.
  8. Be willing to take the Pledge of Allegiance.

There is also the Naturalization Eligibility Tool, which you can use to get an idea of whether you are eligible for the Naturalization Application (N-400). This tool is NOT determinative; only USCIS can determine whether you are eligible for naturalization citizenship by reviewing your information.
