Repatriation is the process by which a person regains the citizenship of the country in which he or she was born after having lost it.
The reasons why this happens are different for each country and time in its history. It depends directly on the policies of the governments in power at the time of the country’s exit.
In the Cuban case, the most common cause was leaving the country at a time in history when it meant the automatic loss of citizenship. However, with the change in emigration policies and respect for citizenship, repatriation was made possible as a representation of the right to be Cuban despite living outside the country.
How do I apply for repatriation?
The request for repatriation must be made in person at the Cuban consulate in the country where the applicant resides or at the Department of Identification, Immigration and Foreigners (DIIE) in Cuba.
In the case of the Cuban Consulate in the United States, the procedure must be carried out through an attorney or an associated agency, since this entity has been providing its services in a non-face-to-face manner since the COVID 19 pandemic.
Required Documents
- Two copies of the completed and signed official form
- Photocopy of the first page of your valid passport
- Two full color passport size photos
- Two photocopies of a form of identification (passport or driver’s license)
- Criminal record certificate
Note: All these documents must be translated into Spanish if they were originally written in another language.
Delay times
Normally, the process can take approximately 90 business days from the time the file is submitted. However, all documents are correct and there are no delays in processing. If the application is approved, the applicant must travel to Cuba within 180 days to complete the process.
